Recent Interesting Links - Bo 5773

B"H, Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlit"a was released from the hospital.

Rabbi Bechhofer has Rav Shlomo Brevda ZT"L's yearbook picture.

Cute, but thought-provoking, video by the Willowbrook Community Kollel (h/t Matzav featured videos):

Disturbing video of Jews being pelted with snowballs in Yerushalayim near Sha'ar Shechem (h/t Arutz Sheva)

2 verses come to mind when I watch this: Mishlei 30:23 and Tehilim 79:4.  This video a reminder of how we are still in Galut and how the tables will soon be turned.  Just wait and see.

I can't watch this video of the Chareidim being tormented again. Thanks anyway. Rather than voting for Gimel, vote for Bayit Yehudi or Otzma L'Yisrael, and we will all learn to defend ourselves together....once we stop worrying about World Public Opinion. We will then have a brigade of Chareidi soldiers guarding Sha'ar Shkhem who stay at their posts while others walk through the Arab Quarter unmolested. (Apparently the soldiers who were supposed to be there at Sha'ar Shkhem took the day off because of the snow.) Baruch Levine will once again give tours of Jewish sites in the Arab Quarter and show us all the holes in the doorposts where the mezuzot used to be before 1948 without getting beaten up. It is always nice to dream.

Do you support compulsory draft? I believe it's in the platform of both parties you mention.

No, On this issue, I support a word that is rarely used here by almost everyone. It is Compromise (P'sharah). It rings like a pleasant sound to the ears. Let us say that the top 30 to 40% of students continue to learn full time. The rest do a Hesder form of national service. Most don't even have to end up carrying an Uzi. Let us say we start a battalion called the Limud Torah battalion to teach secular Israeli soldiers the Aleph and Bet of Torah Mi'Sinai. Because of the dearth of that knowledge perhaps 20% of the "drafted" Chareidim could be in this battalion. In addition, yes, there will be some Chareidi soldiers fighting wars and carrying weapons. But this is already happening anyway. So it would be nothing new. And there are other forms of national service besides Limud Torah and becoming a paratrooper.

Yet, as usual until a Great Compromiser arises to find the best mix or the best p'sharah, we will fight internecine battles of venomous speech and viper's tongue defending our turf or trying to remove G-d and Torah from the State. Hopefully Naftali Bennett or Rav Dahan will find the middle ground that we all secretly desire and need badly.

I understand your position but from my viewpoint there is only one admissible compromise: both military service and national service should be entirely voluntary, no different than any other profession and no different from any other country. In fact, no different from how it is for Israeli citizens who are registered as non-jewish. Society is now very specialized and manpower is not needed, in fact in most professions it's an unwanted burden. Thus there is no reason and no advantage for the state in forcing people to do military service or any sort of "volunteer" program, no more than there is for it to force everyone to take a class in engineering or in accounting or perhaps tomato hybridation. As it is apparent by the fact no other country bothers any more with such compulsory programs.

The reason for the insistence is likely to be different, correct me if I am wrong.

Jerusalem 2013 or Warsaw 1943? What happened to Never Again? Ultimately the State of Israel isn't redemption. Some of these mamzerim are leaving comments on this blog. A terrible fate awaits the whole rotten bunch.

Dov you mentioned about 9 month pregnancy, what will be after month?

The dates of the Israeli elections are the 11th and the evening of the 12th of Shevat. Since the nine months began on Tisha B'Av 5772 and since Rosh Chodesh Shevat, Nisan, Siwan, Av, and Rosh HaShana 5774 fall one day early so that Yom Kippur will not fall out on a Motzei Shabbat 5774, the date of the Israeli election is exactly at the end of the 6th month and the beginning of the 7th month. The average pregnancy is 39 weeks which is exactly 9 Hebrew months (each month averaging 29.5 days) plus one week. This places the end of the nine months according to the Zohar VaYeira between Pesach Sheini and Lag B'Omer. The Zohar there refers to Yirmiyahu 30:7: It is a time of Trouble for Ya'akov, and from it he will be saved. The previous verse 30:6 refers to the period of time from Av 5772 until a great salvation as being compared to a man giving birth in agony in the ninth month or at the end of a "pregnancy". Now this is the Zohar's dating system.

Additionally, Palestine was established by the UN on the 29th of November 2012. They will likely expect a result from this resolution by May 14th, 2013 since November 29th, 1947 was the date of the original Partition Plan. This year the 29th of November fell on the 15th of Kislev 5773. The UN or Obama or both will try to take further action in March or April with another international conference so that on May 14th Palestine will be established by Israel leaving Judea and Samaria. So the conference will likely take place before that...in the Great City of Rome?? We will see as the time approaches, but if they picked Nov. 29th to vote on an original resolution, surely they have a timetable. Again this is the Zohar's timetable per events that are on this page VaYeira 119 that have already occurred in 5760, 5766, and 5772. Since the events did occur, we have an unusual perspective that Rav Shimon Bar Yochai did not have: 20/ 20 hindsight.

I should mention that we know that Rosh Chodesh Shevat, Nisan, Siwan, Av and Rosh HaShana 5774 are one day early because on each of these New Moons, the molad falls on the day of Rosh Chodesh itself. In ancient times the New Moon would be seen at sunset at least four to six hours after the molad itself. But here as in Rosh Chodesh Shevat, the molad was around 4:30 am on Shabbat morning. But Hillel HaSheini for whatever reason did not want Yom Kippur falling on Motzei Shabbat, probably because unlike Tisha B'Av the fast on Yom Kippur must begin at least 18 minutes before sundown on the 9th of Tishrei too. This would involve fasting on Shabbat after eating all day rather than simply beginning the fast at sundown as is done with Tisha B'Av for example. This seems to be at least part of the intention of advancing the calendar by one day which was done when during this past Chanukah Kislev only had 29 days when it usually has 30 days.
