Protesting Those Who Speak Against Rav Ovadia

From Ladaat

There will be a protest in Ashdod to show support to Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlit"a, and to protest actions and words that degrade his honor.

Unfortunately, the elections is Israel have caused some people to forget normal behavior and behave badly.  In the most troublesome of these incidents, the head of the newspaper Hapeles was stabbed next to his home.  But, the bad behavior is not limited to the Ashkenazic world.

In the Sephardic world, the rise of 2 Sephardic parties other than Shas have caused the rabbis running them to make some statements which are or have been perceived as negative toward Rav Ovadia.  Hence, the protest.  Meanwhile, Rav Shimon Ba'adani Shlit"a had met with one of the rabbis on Thursday to help ease the tensions.  It is not known what came out of that meeting.

Source: Ladaat and Kikar.  See also this post, especially the quote from Bava Metzia 84b.

The protest is a necessary evil, but it is a shame that we have all this going on - especially now.  The weeks of Vayigash and Vayehi should be the weeks of the year where Ahdut should be on everyone's mind.  And just like last year at this time, division is at its peak.  It's hard to believe.  May we find the right recipe for Ahdut in our midst in order to attain the arrival of Mashiah, speedily in our days, Amen.
